Firefox 3.5 to get first update later this month.

The Mozilla team is rushing to create the first minor update for its just-released browser Firefox 3.5 for a mid- to late July release. The update will fix at least three of 55 published bugs in the new browser. Firefox 3.5.1, due in mid to late July, is planned as a “quick turnaround” update that “fixes topcrashes and bugs [Mozilla] almost held ship for.” These topfixes are a cryptography issue under Windows XP, disconnected Arabic letters in edit fields as well as crashes caused by the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine. Mozilla has not yet decided whether 3.5.1 will be labeled as a major update or if that phrase will be reserved for version 3.5.2.

Internet porn and the church.

For many Christians, internet pornography has largely been a problem 'out there,' a crisis that wasn't thought to affect many within the Christian fold. But according to various experts, internet porn has not only infiltrated the church -- it has set up camp. Last year, the ministry Living Waters Canada held a conference to address the crisis. The conference title emphasized the seriousness of the problem: 'Pornography: The Christian's Drug of Choice.' Some might think that is overstating the problem. But, in fact, every new study seems to indicate that internet pornography addiction among Christians is spinning out of control.

Porn producer Rob Zicari and wife get 1-year jail terms.

Porn producer Rob Zicari's attorney called his client a changed man at his sentencing yesterday for distributing obscenity. "I believe Rob has learned a valuable lesson" since being indicted for selling graphic pornography featuring the rape and murder of women, said H. Louis Sirkin. "I think he's an entirely different human being today."Both Mr. Zicari and Ms. Romano were sentenced to one year and one day in prison. The sentencing was the conclusion of a long, hard-fought battle on both sides, in which the defendants nearly secured a victory 16 months after the charges were filed when U.S. District Judge Gary L. Lancaster threw out the case. His decision was later overturned by the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The defendants planned to take the case to a jury trial, but in March, instead decided to plead guilty. Both Mr. Zicari, 35, and Ms. Romano, 32, of Northridge, Calif., faced a potential term of 21 to 27 months in prison, but Judge Lancaster chose to sentence them below the recommended guideline range. By adding an extra day onto the year-long sentence, they can qualify to earn nearly two months of time off their sentences, provided they do not have any disciplinary problems in prison.

Spam levels bounce back after botnet takedown.

Spam levels are returning to normal following the recent takedown of crime-friendly ISP 3FN, which temporarily interrupted the operation of a significant spam spewing botnet. Junk mail volumes dropped 30 per cent after the Federal Trade Commission forced the closure of 3FN in early June, according to Google. Google's latest quarterly spam trends report records a 14 per cent rise in junk mail volumes from the 3FN takedown low by the end of June. Stats from Postini, the online spam and virus filtering service acquired by Google, reveal that average spam levels in the second quarter of 2009 were 53 per cent higher than in the first quarter and six per cent higher than in the same period of 2008.

Court: MySpace not liable for offline assaults.

Social-networking sites and other Web services can't be held liable in a sexual assault on a minor that stemmed from a meeting online, according to a ruling in a California appeals court that consolidated a number of complaints against MySpace on behalf of teenage girls and their parents. Reuters reported late on Wednesday that the Second District Court of Appeals in Los Angeles cited the Communications Decency Act in coming to the conclusion. Claiming negligence and product liability, the plaintiffs had alleged that MySpace had failed to put in place age verification software or to keep profiles on a "private" setting. Other federal courts have come to similar rulings. Last year, a Texas court ruled that the family of a 14-year-old girl who was assaulted by a man she met on MySpace could not hold the social network responsible. The girl in question had lied about her age when she created a profile, claiming to be a legal adult, and the court ruled that it was her parents' job, not MySpace's, to keep her safe.

China's Green Dam internet filtering system will go ahead, official says.

China's controversial plan to install Green Dam internet filtering software on all computers will go ahead despite being postponement, a government official told state media today. The official said it was only "a matter of time" until the software was installed. The remarks – if they fully reflect official policy – will anger internet users, who mounted a vociferous campaign against the policy this week and hoped they had secured a victory against government censorship.China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced a delay in the implementation of the programme late on Tuesday, hours before it had been supposed to come into force.

Ugly Betty: the porn version?

Watch out Wilhelmina! Porn mogul Michael Lucas has a walk-on role in an upcoming episode of ABC's hit show Ugly Betty, which he won through a charity auction held by the Stonewall Community Foundation. Says Lucas, "I paid $18,000.00 for the opportunity, and this is a chance for adult stars to step out of their box. My appearance will also show American audiences that there is no reason a porn star can't appear on national television." It looks like this hit show may get a bit steamy this season.

Some Vista users say they're getting the Ultimate shaft.

Microsoft promised that by purchasing the pricey Ultimate edition of Vista users would get all kinds of extras. However, for many, those extras turned out to be little more than a few screensavers and a poker game, prompting some significant grousing. Now, that frustration has turned to anger after Microsoft offered its pre-order program for Windows 7.Through July 11, Microsoft is offering a steep discount for those moving to cheaper versions of Windows 7, but nothing for those who want to stay on Ultimate. Under the terms of Microsoft's discount pre-order program, users can buy an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional at roughly half the list price, but the Ultimate version is offered at the full $219 price.

Google Reverses Adult/Porn Site Penalties.

On Monday we reported that Google spanked the adult porn industry by penalizing many of the sites. There were many theories as to why those sites were penalized. It wasn't all the adult sites that were penalized but a nice percentage were. Sometime last night, Google seemed to have reversed the penalty. An updated Google Webmaster Help thread reports two of the adult webmasters saying their sites are back to normal in the Google index. One said: "My rankings are back, right where they were. So are some of the other sites I know were penalized." What exactly caused the temporary penalty is not yet known. It might have been a misclassification of something all those sites are using. Hard to know exactly without a Googler coming in and letting us know. One adult webmaster wants to know why this happened. Why did he lose his rankings and revenue for several days due to this Google glitch? He asked: Yes same here all search engine traffic has returned, so whats your take on this everyone? Was it just part of a google dance? Did google make a mistake? I mean we obviously we're penalised to begin with since we all moved to page 4-5 of the search results. And now we've all come back when many people changed nothing on their sites cause they thought it would make matters worse? It's a mystery isn't it? I am not sure if all these adult sites have been restored in Google yet or if it was just a handful, but it seems like many are coming back.

Share Your Way to Better SEO.

When people talk about SEO, it's frequently in hushed tones, like some great secret is being discussed. Even more often, it's based more in esoteric questions than statements: What goes into PageRank? How does one sculpt it? How many tags are too many? It's much more "Da Vinci Code" than "Indiana Jones," as much as SEOs might prefer to imagine themselves in an Indy hat with a whip in one hand and the key to some lost civilization's knowledge in the other and a John Williams soundtrack in the background. C'mon, don't pretend you're not thinking it right now.

President Yushchenko signs Ukraine porn law despite widespread opposition.

Over the protests of free-speech proponents, human-right activists and many other segments of the population, President Victor Yushchenko has signed a controversial law that bans pornography despite failing to define it. The law calls for strict punishment of people for possessing, selling and disseminating pornography, as defined by police and courts. The law was adopted by parliament on June 11 and mustered 343 votes in favor out of a possible 450. It gained support from most political camps, enough to override a presidential veto. Experts and activists have long called for tighter regulation of pornographic materials in Ukraine, a country seen as a big source of child pornography, due to weak punishment and weak protection of children’s rights.

Balancing Efficiency and Volume in Paid Search.

So you've been running paid search for while and you think it's pretty cool. You can identify users who are deep in the purchase funnel and drive sales results for your business. You can optimize how much you pay for those results based on your sales and return goals. A successful campaign is measured by the goals set forth prior to campaign launch. These goals should be focused around the needs of the business. A goal can be based on a variety of metrics, including revenue, orders, applications, ROI, or cost per lead.

Calif. porn dealers face federal sentencing in Pa.

A husband and wife who owned a California company that distributed videos depicting deviant sexual conduct, including simulated rape and murder, are scheduled for sentencing before a federal judge in Pittsburgh. Robert Zicari and Janet Romano pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to distribute DVDs purchased by an undercover U.S. postal inspector in Pittsburgh and face sentencing Wednesday along with their company, Extreme Associates Inc. of Northridge, Calif. The couple contests the government's claim that the material is "sadistic or masochistic" for sentencing purposes, and their attorneys are expected to argue for probation. U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan says any jury in the country would have found the DVDs "obscene" under federal law.

Conservative Christian groups form new federation against abortion, pornography, same-sex marriage.

Conservative Christian organizations are joining forces to defend traditional values they believe are under assault in the U.S. today. The new coalition, called the Freedom Federation, unites black and Hispanic evangelicals with the American Family Association, Concerned Women for America, the Family Research Council, and other groups. Leaders of those organizations gathered in Washington Tuesday to strategize how they can work together against abortion, pornography, same-sex "marriage," and threats to parental rights and religious liberty. A press release states that the group "encompasses individuals of different races, faiths, and backgrounds who are committed to the preservation of freedom and American values, founded on the Judeo-Christian tradition."

China Backs Down from Green Dam Filtering, Citizens Throw Parties.

China said yesterday that it will delay the mandatory installation of its controversial pornography filtering software on new computers, hours before the policy was due to start. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the pre-installation was postponed as some computer producers said such a massive change demanded extra time. "The ministry will keep on soliciting opinions to perfect the pre-installation plan," a ministry spokesman said. All computers produced or sold in China were scheduled to have the Green Dam-Youth Escort software installed starting today, according to an earlier order from the ministry. The spokesman said the ministry will continue to provide free downloads of the software and equip school and Internet bar computers with it. The Green Dam plan is designed to stamp out Internet violence and pornography to protect minors as well as to help parents control how much time their children spend online.

Our outdated obscenity law.

Authors across the UK breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as a landmark prosecution for obscenity was dropped at the 11th hour. The importance of this case cannot be underestimated: for the alternative situation in which this prosecution had succeeded would have changed the nature of the internet (and publishing) in the UK for years to come. Newcastle civil servant Darryn Walker was charged with publishing obscene material in respect of a story, Girls (Scream) Aloud, posted nearly two years ago on an internet archive based in the US, dedicated to hosting stories of an erotic nature. Walker's blog was seriously questionable both on grounds of literary merit and taste: a work of violent sexual fantasy involving the mutilation and murder of each member of the Girls Aloud pop group, whose body parts are then sold on e-Bay.

Firefox 3.5. Don't update yet if you use Google Gears.

Firefox is my default browser. I have all of my bookmarks in Firefox and a set of plugs that I don't think I could do without. That being said, other browsers, specifically Safari and Chrome are becoming more and more appealing. Firefox 3.5 final was released yesterday and a lot has changed. The browser is certainly faster, it has private browsing (sometimes referred to as porn mode) and a bunch of other niceties. Check Preston Gralla's review for the details. One thing that isn't ready for primetime, however, is its Google Gears support. As a lot of people probably do, I use Gears to cache my corporate Gmail/Calendar/Docs for offline viewing. As of this writing Gears hasn't been updated to work with Firefox 3.5.

Aussie Official Wants to Block Adult Video Game Sites.

Australian Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is at it again. Following his campaign for a "Great Aussie Firewall" and blacklist of sites, the senator now wants to prevent access to adult video game websites. Unlike most other industrial nations, Australia does not have an R18+ classification that restricts game purchases to those who are 18 and older. Any titles that don't meet MA15+ requirements — i.e., containing extreme violence or sexual content not suitable for mature 15-year-olds — are banned by the country's classification board and cannot be sold in stores.
