Fault found at Linux core

Linux users have been advised to upgrade to the latest stable kernel, after the discovery of a critical vulnerability in the core code. Because the flaw is in the Linux kernel, the problem affects virtually every distribution of the operating system and several vendors have already confirmed that their products are vulnerable. The weakness would allow any local user to escalate their privileges to root, and perform any task they chose on the system, the advisory note said. Experts at security specialist Symantec explained that remote attacks from outside the firewall were not possible.

Deck The Halls With High-Speed Access

After years of anticipation, this holiday season seems destined to go down in the books as the First Broadband Christmas. Thanks to sharp cuts in the price of high-speed Internet access, the number of U.S. homes with broadband has jumped 38% from last holiday season to 22 million. That spells big opportunities for e-merchants. Not only are broadband customers online for more of the day than their dial-up brethren, they also spend as much as 30% more.

Senate Passes Concurrent Resolution Encouraging Obscenity Enforcement

Last week the United States Senate passed a resolution by unanimous consent calling for the attorney general and the Department of Justice to enact “ vigorous enforcement of the Federal obscenity laws.” The resolution, introduced to the floor by Senator Orin Hatch, doesn’t attempt to create new law. It simply says that obscenity laws should be enforced. The resolution was passed by unanimous consent, which means that no one objected to the resolution, but not that the entire Senate voted in favor of the resolution.

Aussie spammers face $1m fines

Sending unwanted junk emails will attract hefty fines but there will be no let up from political parties, churches and charities who are exempt from new anti-spam laws. The new laws passed the Australian parliament today but are unlikely to make a dent on the bulk of unsolicited commercial emails, or spam, which originate overseas. About five billion spam messages are sent every day and about half of all emails Australians receive are junk. Organisations found to be repeat offenders could be hit with fines in excess of AU$1 million.

Camera Phones: The Ultimate Invasion of Privacy?

As camera phones increase in popularity, so do Web sites known as "moblogs" -- short for mobile Weblog. These sites are online galleries of digital images taken primarily with camera phones, which make it easy to snap a picture and post it online in a matter of seconds. There are so-called "peeping Tom" and "video voyeurism" laws in California and other states that prohibit the use of cameras, camcorders and similar devices in situations where there's a "reasonable expectation of privacy." But the concern is that as these devices become more common and easier to conceal, privacy violations of "digital voyeurism" are more likely to occur.
