Below is a press release from SEG's Legal Department which we print in it's entirety:
Mr. Steve Sweet, President of Sweet Entertainment Group (SEG), and 3 other principals of the Corporation were charged on December 6, 2002 with 6 counts of obscenity based on 3 specific videos from the SadoSlaves.com Library.
SEG has not been charged with any criminal offense. Mr. Sweet has not been detained in this matter.
The Crown has alleged that Lexa Lords, Naughty Nikki and Mistress Twilight sadoslaves.com video episodes are obscene pursuant to s. 163 of the Criminal Code of Canada. Three counts allege that the accused "did make, distribute and circulate an obscene video" and three counts allege "did have in their possession for the purpose of publication, distribution and circulation, an obscene video."
It appears that the Crown is concentrating its efforts on the BDSM subculture by alleging that the material in question combines explicit sex with violence or torture or that the material is degrading and dehumanizing. The Crown has not to date provided particulars of what segment of the videos it regards as being obscene.
The charges stem from Vancouver Police Department raids on the premises of Sweet Entertainment Group that occurred on March 13, 2002 and second raid that occurred November 7, 2002.
A number of pre-charge applications and motions to Court have already been successfully brought by SEG resulting in Orders from both the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Provincial Court of British Columbia for the return of SEG property.
The most recent decision from the Supreme Court of Canada regarding obscenity is a 1992 decision Regina v. Butler. Much has changed in the past 10 years, with the explosion of the Internet, the commercial availability of BDSM type content and the shift of community standards this past decade. Mr. Sweet has indicated that SEG will vigorously defend the charges. The case is far from trial and many matters remain to be dealt with. Of course, should the matter reach trial constitutional arguments regarding Freedom of Speech under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms will be at the forefront of what will likely prove to be a precedent setting case.
The maximum penalty under Canadian law for this offence is 2 years. A conviction generally results in a fine.

ProxyPass server protection-ware adds standalone version
There are now two version of the ProxyPass software: the original, "full" version, and the newer, "standalone" version. The "standalone" version has all the features of the "full" version with the sole exception that it is NOT a client/server architecture. The "standalone" version does not have access to the dynamic proxy data stored on the centralized ProxyPass servers. Thus, the "standalone" version does not immediately block open, abusable proxies. It will still block open proxies, but it will block them only --after-- their usage has exceeded the webmaster-defined threshholds that define cracking behavior. The reason for the two versions is that some customers have expressed concerns that the "full" ProxyPass version is overly secure. Customers argue that legitimate customers who are not brute-force password-cracking may still use open, abusable proxies to surf the web. Although extensive benchmarking has shown baseline open proxy usage to be 1.35%-1.85%, their concerns are alleviated by the "standalone" ProxyPass version; the "standlone" version will block open proxies only after their usage has been deemed fraudulent.

Legal Sodomy Would Lead To Pedophilia, Bestiality.
This is a response to Nicole Mullins' article, "High Court should overturn ruling, protect privacy of sexual intimacy." There are a few problems with it. First, she sets up a straw man that does not exist. Her article starts out: "Imagine a society that would allow police to barge into your bedroom to arrest you for having intimate relations with your partner." Mullins then goes on to express concern over the need for the police to spend their time on more important crimes. The homosexuals should not be picked on.

New '.kids' Domain Will Aid Families.
We are raising a generation of children for whom the Internet is a practical tool they use in their daily lives both to learn and to have fun. On Wednesday, those parents got some help as President Bush signed into law legislation creating a new kids-safe "playground" on the Internet. The new ".kids" domain will be free of pornography and other inappropriate materials. Parents will have the reassurance of knowing that when their children are logged on to a ".kids" site, they are protected from online dangers.

Owners of Foreign Pornographic Web-sites Attach Their Material to Russia.
'Owners of foreign pornographic internet materials are 'tethering' web-sites to Russia to confuse the world community and Interpol,' announced Head of the Moscow High Technology Crime Department Dmitri Chepchugov. In order to do this, he said, pornographers are using such software solutions as 'Redirect' and 'Anonymising'. These schemes are 'giving the world community a false view of Russia as the centre of child porn because there is no appropriate Russian legislation in this area.'

Bush signs 'kid-safe Internet' bill.
President Bush signed legislation yesterday to create an Internet haven for kids. The legislation establishes a new Internet domain reserved only for kid-safe content. The international body that governs domain names had refused to create a suffix — like ".com" and ".org" — for child-appropriate content. So the measure establishes a new ".kids.us" Internet domain that Bush said would "function much like the children's section of the library." It is to be available within a year and will be overseen by the federal government.

Antivirus companies are warning of a damaging new e-mail worm, which, when activated, deletes all files on drives labelled D, E, F and G. The new worm is not widespread yet, with e-mail screening firm MessageLabs, who call the worm W32/SfxDeth.A-MM. The worm, dubbed W32/Lagel.A by antivirus company Panda Software, arrives in an e-mail titled "Fwd: Crazy Illegal Sex" with an attachment called IlleGal.exe. If the file is executed, the worm creates four new files on the computer and runs a series of graphics implying the e-mail was simply a joke.

Canadian Bill aims to toughen laws against child porn.
The federal government has introduced sweeping legislation aimed at closing loopholes in Canada's child pornography laws and protecting kids from sexual exploitation. The omnibus bill, tabled by Justice Minister Martin Cauchon in the House of Commons on Thursday, would limit those accused of child pornography offences to a single defence of "public good."

Shock is the only way to describe the emotions of city staff last Monday, Nov. 25 when they discovered that the Safari Island website was no longer within city control. Microsoft warns of IE, Outlook flaws.
Microsoft late Wednesday warned of new security glitches in some of its Internet software that could expose sensitive data. The Redmond, Wash., company said a glitch could allow hackers to pilfer information from computers running versions of its Internet Explorer Web browser. The Internet Explorer security hole affects versions 5.5 and 6 for Windows. IE 5.01 is not affected by the glitch.

Congress Passes Legislation To Create New Internet Realm For Kids.
Congress approved legislation Friday to create a safe haven on the Internet for children, where parents can be assured Web sites are free of pornography and other material not suitable for youngsters. The measure would make a ".kids.us" Internet domain that would be available within a year and monitored by a government contractor to ensure the material is appropriate for children under 13. The bill won unanimous approval from the Senate on Wednesday and the House on Friday. It now goes to President Bush, who was expected to sign it.
